About the Author:Ĭharles Dickens was born on 7th February, 1812 at Portsea, near Portsmouth, where his father was a clerk in the Navy Pay office. Please read on for this blog’s first book review. And as must be obvious by now, The Pickwick Papers is what shall be reviewing today. Though written in the often flowery and intricately descriptive style of Charles Dickens, The Pickwick Papers is a heartily humorous narrative about the society of those times. The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens is arguably one of the best comic novels of all times. But at the same time there is something desperately sad about how lonely he appears. In this Egger is stoic, which I can admire. As modernity permeates his village, Andreas Egger pushes back with his vision of how things should be and does not allow himself to be swept up in the transformation. Naturally a lone wolf, we follow Egger as he withdraws further into solitude, seemingly abhorrent of human contact. Through Egger, we see the result of real trauma and the impact of a tragic event. Robert Seethaler expertly depicts real emotion through him, and the result is extremely moving. I was struck by Andreas Egger as a character. The narrative is not linear, so although it is at times difficult to keep track of the timeline, this technique suits the feel of the novel (navigating through ambiguity in times of change). Charlotte Collins skilfully captures the bleak yet beautiful atmosphere through her translation. Set against a pastoral landscape, Seethaler's writing style is somewhat reminiscent of Thomas Hardy's novels. If you’re looking for a book with a black protagonist…this…is one. My favorite parts of this book are those graphics AND the fact that the young and aspiring ballerina is a young black girl. The stage floor and the red curtain were amazing! I did love the collage effect of odd shapes of paper that make up the sky, the skyline, the water, the pavement and windows. The inside graphics are similar to the cover with its modern blocks a collage of texture and color. The inside end papers are a collage of textures from yellow to deepest orange. I’m simply unimpressed with the supposed “story”. To be fair, I suspect most of these awards are because it’s written by a black ballerina with a young black heroine. No one says anything no one looks at anyone. They disappear through the front connecting door. Moments later one of the Lorders from the back of the car walks past, dragging the small boy along with him. I don’t dare turn, but she does, and her face crumples. His hand clamps on her shoulder, pulls her up. He holds up the retinal scanner to her eye. He is certain he’s found the one he looks for. But the Lorder’s lips curve in a small smile of satisfaction. Her face is beyond pale, more gray, and her shaking hand holds out her ID and ticket. I glance down the small boy is crawling under the seats. Something bumps my foot and I almost scream.
