About the Author:During his career spanning 38 years, Anil Swarup attempted to 'make it happen'. This memoir is a deeply personal reckoning of a man who attempted to make-things-happen with the hope to inspire others to do the same. The book is a culmination of Swarup's initiatives and intense engagement with various contentious issues both at the state and at national level. It also lays bare the understanding of administration by a bureaucrat. He describes his triumphs and his disappointments, both public and private, narrating his story as he has lived, in his own words and on his own terms. The memoir records the travails and tribulations of Anil Swarup as a decision maker and as an internal observer of the system. His career, spanning 38 years, revolved round tackling myriad of issues that ranged from dealing with corruption in the state of Uttar Pradesh to coal mafias, witnessing the aftermath of Babri Masjid demolition to handling education mafias. He invites readers into his world chronicling the experiences that shaped him from growing years as a student to his years of rigorous training as a civil servant and finally managing crisis, both man-made and otherwise, that confronted the government. Not Just A Civil Servant drafts the journey of Anil Swarup, a civil servant who survived despite being politically incorrect. Yes, I admired her bravery and ability to keep pushing on despite her fears and being surrounded by literal monsters. Just like in book one, I didn’t really like her character much more in this one (although I didn’t hate her). TWK is once again told from Jude’s perspective and only her perspective. It takes a lot for me to enjoy a story when I don’t connect with the characters, but I kept plodding along because I wanted to know if my opinion would change. And let me tell you, it’s underwhelming to not feel for the characters especially when there’s a lot that happens to and around them - betrayals, chemistry, scheming, fights etc. I liked the story, I thought the characters were interesting, but I also found myself not really caring about what happened to them, especially Jude. I think the main reason was the lack of connection to the characters and I realised the same thing when reading TWK. I was a little underwhelmed when I re-read TCP earlier this year, especially with all the hype surrounding the series. 3.5 stars for that pre-epilogue ending! And just when I thought that things were turning around and I’d like this newly established alliance, that ending had to go and happen! I’m shook but also angry? But also, I get it too? This seems to have really messed with my feelings (of which I thought I didn’t have many of for this series) □ In fact, the latter was the one who got Teresa a job -after Tomas asked her to do so. However, despite the commitment, the man never contemplated leaving his adventures, nor abandon his closest lover: the liberal artist Sabina. She was a waitress full of charisma that immediately caught him in an intense infatuation. For nearly a decade of singleness he had many lovers, until he met Teresa. Tired of conflicts over visits, he gave the mother full custody. In the failed marriage, which lasted two years, a boy was born. Tomas was a divorced Czechoslovakian doctor who lived in Prague.
